Scuba Diving in Mombasa
Our boat goes out in the morning, when the sea is usually calmest and underwater light is best.
A typical trip runs two dives on local reef sites, with a surface interval between them. The ocean tends to be glassy early on, especially during the dry seasons — June to October, and January to March — before any afternoon breeze picks up. Boat rides from Diani Beach are short, so you get more time in the water and less time traveling. Reefs here sit between five and twenty-five meters , with coral formations and sandy channels that draw a wide range of reef fish.
If you’re staying in Mombasa and want to dive with us, an early pickup gets you to Diani in time for the morning boat. It’s a longer day than diving locally, but most visitors say the reef quality makes it worthwhile.

Why Most Scuba Diving in Mombasa Actually Happens in Diani

Guided Dives
If you’re flying into Mombasa Moi International Airport, reaching Diani Beach is straightforward. A taxi or arranged transfer takes you south using the Dongo Kundu bypass and on to Diani in around 60 minutes depending on traffic. By SGR, they have shuttles that come from the Mombasa terminus to Diani. One can also book a taxi or take an Uber to Diani Beach. From Nairobi, you’ve got a few options. The fastest is a direct flight to Ukunda Airstrip, right on the doorstep of Diani Beach, usually around an hour in the air. Alternatively, you can fly into Mombasa and transfer south by road, or take the Nairobi–Mombasa Standard Gauge Railway and continue from there by shuttle. Some visitors drive the entire route from Nairobi, which takes seven to eight hours depending on conditions..
Once you’re in Diani, everything sits close together — the beach, our dive centre, and local accommodation are all within easy reach of each other, which is a big part of why so many divers choose to base themselves here rather than in Mombasa town.
If you’re on the coast for several days, a dive package works out better value than booking single dives.
Packages bundle multiple dives across several days, including equipment, tanks, weights, and boat fees, with the per-dive cost dropping as the package grows. Each reef along the South Coast has its own character — some are coral gardens suited to relaxed exploring, others attract larger fish, turtles, and seasonal pelagic visitors. A multi-day package gives you a real chance to see that range, rather than just one site.
We can also combine a package with a certification course if you’re working toward Open Water or Advanced during your stay. For visitors splitting time between Mombasa and the South Coast, we’ll structure the package around the days you’re actually near Diani Beach.
Many visitors use “Mombasa” to mean the whole coastal region, which is understandable. For many years, when Kenya was only divided into seven provinces for simplicity, everything near Mombasa was simply called Mombasa. That slightly changed when counties were created and Diani became part of Kwale County. However, still, Diani is referred to as Diani Mombasa by some. So naturally, visitors planning to scuba dive in the coastal region would be searching for scuba diving in Mombasa. Scuba diving in Mombasa would not actually be the best, because the best diving on this coast isn’t actually in the city. For the healthy coral reefs, the clear water, and the marine life people picture sit a little south from Tiwi Diani Beach, Galu Beach, and Kinodo, with the reefs stretching toward Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park. That’s where we at The Scuba Duka Diving Centre cater to guests looking for scuba diving in Mombasa.

If you’ve never dived before, this is where to start. No previous training, no equipment knowledge, no swimming test beyond basic water comfort.
Your instructor explains everything on land first — breathing through a regulator, clearing your mask, simple hand signals underwater. Then you head into the pool and your scuba instructor stays with you the entire time.
Almost everyone is a little nervous before their first dive. That’s normal. Most people relax within a few minutes of their first breath underwater — the warm water here helps, since there’s no cold shock pulling your focus away from the reef in front of you. During your first dive you might spot turtle, butterflyfish, angelfish, triggerfish, pufferfish, or octopus tucked into the coral. For visitors who flew in through Mombasa with only a day or two on the coast, this is the fastest way to find out if diving is for you.
Getting to Diani Beach from Mombasa and Nairobi
Beginner Try Scuba Experience
For certified divers, a guided dive means going out with a scuba instructor who actually knows these reefs, not just coordinates, but where the turtles tend to rest, where the current usually runs, and which sites suit the day’s conditions.
This matters more than people expect. Reef character changes a lot over short distances here in Diani Beach. Some sites are sheltered coral gardens, others are suitable for drift diving along current lines with more open-water fish activity. A scuba instructor guide who dives these waters every week spots things a guidebook never will, leaf scorpionfish, hidden octopus, small nudibranchs tucked into coral that are nearly impossible to find on your own.
Expect regular sightings of moray eels, lion fish, angelfish, butterflyfish, eagle rays, and turtles, with reef sharks on the right day. Your scuba instructor guide chooses the site based on season, current, and your group’s experience.
Diving for Kids
Children aged eight and above can explore diving at The Scuba Duka Diving Center, where they will receive personalized supervision from a scuba instructor throughout the experience.
We provide equipment that is specifically scaled down for children, including appropriately sized masks, BCDs, and fins, rather than using adult gear that is adjusted to fit. The sessions remain shallow, calm, and relaxed, with many kids mastering underwater breathing faster than adults. Training takes place in a controlled setting in a pool, emphasizing safety, confidence, and essential marine awareness while ensuring fun.
Families who are already in Mombasa and looking for diving opportunities with children are invited to join us for diving at Diani Beach. The gentler, warmer waters of Diani Beach significantly enhance the underwater experience, especially for beginners or anxious children.

SSI Scuba Divivng Courses
We provide a range of SSI diving courses for all levels, from beginners to professionals. Scuba Schools International is one of the two principal diving agencies recognized on a global scale. Certifications obtained through us are valid at dive centers around the world.
The courses include theoretical knowledge that is digitized and accessible online, allowing you to complete it before arriving. At the diving center, you'll have opportunities for water skills practice prior to embarking on dives in the coral reefs of the Indian Ocean along Diani Beach. We maintain small class sizes, usually accommodating one to four students per scuba instructor, ensuring that training fosters confidence gradually instead of feeling hurried.
If you're in Mombasa for work or an extended stay and have some free days, training with us at Diani Beach on the South Coast would be a fantastic option. The ocean conditions here tend to be more favorable compared to those in Mombasa.
Open Water Certification
The SSI Open Water Diver course is the foundational certification that enables you to dive independently with a buddy to a depth of eighteen meters, anywhere around the globe.
This course typically lasts three to four days and includes theoretical instruction, confined water training, and four open water dives. We keep student groups small to ensure personalized attention from instructors, and all students complete their checkout dives in an actual coral reef instead of a quarry or harbor, making a significant impact on your experience and confidence by the conclusion of the course.
If you are visiting Mombasa from Nairobi or elsewhere and wish to enroll in the open water certification course, feel free to give us a call or send us a message, and we will do our best to accommodate your schedule. Whether you are a traveler from Nairobi looking to dive in Mombasa, or if you actually meant to explore Diani Beach or the real Mombasa while seeking an exceptional diving experience, we are excited to assist you in your diving adventure and open water certification.
Advanced Open Water Diving Course
Refresher Diving Courses
The SSI Advanced Open Water course enhances the Open Water certification through five specialty dives — typically including deep diving and navigation, along with three additional dives selected from options such as buoyancy control, fish identification, or wreck diving.
This course is ideal for divers who possess a basic certification and wish to gain confidence in a broader array of conditions. We offer the Advanced Open Water Diving course and conduct these dives at various familiar and challenging locations, including the Alpha Funguo Wreck and Kinondo.
The Divemaster is the first professional qualification in recreational diving. It allows you to lead certified divers and assist instructors running courses.
It’s a serious undertaking — weeks of structured training, in-water skill assessments, and a substantial number of logged dives across varied conditions. Training in Diani Beach means working with a wide range of reef types and diver experience levels, which builds a broader, more adaptable skill set than training in one uniform location.
The Kenya coast draws future dive professionals for exactly this reason — year-round diving and rich marine biodiversity. We accept Divemaster candidates based in Diani Beach or able to stay for the program’s duration.
Dive Master Certification
If it’s been a year or two since your last dive, a refresher session is essential before you return to open water.
We guide you through the setup of equipment, safety protocols, and buoyancy exercises in the pool at Soul Breeze Beach Resort until your skills feel second nature. Ear equalization typically returns almost right away; however, buoyancy control might take a bit longer to adjust. Once you feel at ease, we will venture out to the reef together.
This is often an ideal first step for vacationers who received their certification years ago, potentially in a different location, and wish to smoothly transition back into scuba diving in Mombasa.
If you prefer not to share a boat with others, we offer private charters for groups who wish to enjoy the day alone. Additionally, we provide boat rentals for excursions to Kisite Mpunguti Marine National Park, which typically occupies most of the day.
Private hires are ideal for families, groups of friends, photographers, or anyone celebrating a special occasion—be it a birthday, an anniversary, or a final day on the coast before heading home. You will have the chance to concentrate solely on diving, snorkeling, or simply enjoying time on the water. Generally, the boat rental includes a fruit platter and ample drinking water. Our captain and crew customize the private boat rentals to meet your needs. Keep in mind that private trips require a bit more advance notice compared to standard bookings, especially during peak season, so we recommend reaching out a few days in advance when possible.
Private Group Boat Trips
Mombasa City sits on an island with a working harbor. It’s a transport hub and a commercial port, but it’s not where the dive boats go out to scuba dive.
The reef systems that most visitors would prefer to visit are the healthy coral, good visibility, and sheltered channels located along the South Coast, starting around Tiwi, along Diani Beach, and continuing down past Galu Beach and Kinondo towards Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park near the Tanzanian border. Mombasa’s own marine park exists, but it’s smaller, and the water close to the city carries more sediment from the harbor and the Likoni channel.
So when people search for scuba diving in Mombasa, what they usually want is the best-quality diving that is reasonably reachable from there. That’s us at The Scuba Duka Diving Center. We’re about an hour south by road.

We keep our boat sizes manageable with our small boat carrying up to four and up to eight on the big boat so that our scuba instructors can properly look after the whole group, not just count heads at the surface.
Many people searching for scuba diving in Mombasa are surprised how close Diani Beach actually is now that they don’t have to use the ferry. Travel from Mombasa using the newly completed Dongo Kundu bypass, typically takes about an hour to Diani, depending on traffic. Shuttles for groups are also available and are more affordable per person than individual hire vehicles. There’s also Uber and other app rides in addition to regular taxis. Let us know your numbers and dates ahead of time, especially during busy months like August and December.

Divers in this area frequently come across sea turtles, moray eels, stingrays, eagle rays, octopuses, pufferfish, lionfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, surgeonfish, groupers, and snappers. Seasonal observations may include whale sharks, dolphins, and humpback whales traveling through deeper waters offshore.
The water temperature remains warm throughout the year, typically ranging from 25°C to 30°C, which allows for comfortable warm water diving in all seasons. Visibility changes with the weather—usually best during the dry months—but the reef continues to be lively and worth the visit all year round. Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, just a short boat ride to the south, is renowned for its particularly healthy coral and consistent sightings of marine life, and we operate trips there when conditions permit.
