Once the briefing is done, the divers double-check their gear to make sure they have everything, and then head out to the boats they have been assigned to. Divers are offered plenty of water and a fresh fruit platter to stay hydrated. It's recommended that divers carry their own sunscreen and, if possible, a pair of sunglasses and a hat to protect themselves from the sun. Once all divers are settled in their respective places on the boat, the trip to the dive sites begins.

The boat crew prepares the boats and loads the tanks. At the Scuba Duka diving centre balcony, the briefing begins. Our scuba instructor goes through all the safety and diving procedures step by step. He then walks them through the diving sites they will be visiting and finally pairs each diver with a scuba instructor.

Do I need to be an experienced diver to join a boat trip?

No. We have sites for all levels. After you complete your beginner-level Try Scuba course, you are taken to calm, shallow reefs with easy entry and exit from the boat.

Where do the boat trips go?

We visit a range of local diving sites depending on conditions, including House Reef, Coral Gardens, Galu Reef, Kinondo Reef, Shark Alley, Alpha Funguo Wreck, among other local dive sites.

How long are the trips?

Local reef dives usually take three to four hours. We typically leave between 8:00 or 8:30 AM and return around midday.

Will I see turtles or dolphins?

Turtle sightings are common on reef dives. Dolphins may be seen en route to or from the dive site. Neither is guaranteed, but both are regular visitors to these waters.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We monitor forecasts every day. If conditions are unsafe, we will cancel or reschedule and let you know as early as possible. Your safety comes before any trip.

Can non-divers or snorkelers join?

Not on the morning dives, but on trips to Kisite Mpunguti National Marine Park or private boat hires, non-divers and snorkelers can join.

How far are the dive sites from the centre?

Most local sites are a short boat ride from the beach in front of ScubaDuka. Kisite Mpunguti is further south and requires a longer journey, which is why it is a full-day trip.

What is the best time of year to go?

October to March, during the Kaskazi season, generally offers the best visibility and calmest conditions. Diving continues year-round, with sheltered sites available during the windier Kusi months.
